Inside the watch is Cartier’s in-house calibre 1847 MC movement, visible through the sapphire exhibition case back. The clé, or key, shaped crown looks like it could be difficult to use, but in reality it’s simply different, rather than difficult - Rather than a conventional finger and thumb twist, I sort of twirl it with one finger sounds odd, but it’s actually quite easy. There are no sharp creases or corners on the case it’s very fluid. Now I typically like a diver or a chronograph more than the average dress watch, but this thing combines dress watch with overtones of seventies diver wrapped in sheer class. Added to the comfort factor were its good looks. The curvaceous case hugged my wrist, like it was a bespoke design, crafted specifically for me. Cartier introduced a more affordable steel model a little under two years later, but my first introduction to the model came onboard the ship early this year.įrom the moment I put it on my wrist, I was smitten. Unlike many Cartier models, this was introduced a mere five years ago.įigured it out yet? It’s a 40mm Clé de Cartier, a relatively new model for the company, originally introduced at SIHH in 2015, only available in solid 18k white, yellow and rose gold, with a price tag to match, particularly so when on a precious metal bracelet. however it does have a blue half cylinder sapphire set into the crown.
It has the classic silvery white dial, with Roman numerals and a round dial, but has no rounded cabachon sapphire on the crown. It has a case that is somehow a throwback to the seventies, yet looks very contemporary. There were a number of models that I liked a lot, but one in particular was just stunning. Nonetheless in that nine days, I managed to look at all of the onboard watch shops (many times) and perused a number of Cartiers for myself. The cruise started the following day, but lasted only nine days before we left the ship in Fremantle Western Australia. She’d been looking at them online for some time, but this was the first lengthy hands-on with them and she decided on a mid-sized Tank Solo on a bracelet. We overnighted in Sydney before boarding the ship and my wife decided to call in to some of the city watch shops and look at some Cartier watches. At the very start of March this year, we were supposed to head off on a six month holiday.
